Assistive Technology

The provision of assistive technology devices and services may play a part in the accommodations and modifications required in order for a student with a disability to make progress in the general education curriculum and/or on his/her goals.  If the student requires the support of assistive technology and supports, the IEP Team must specify what they are in the IEP.

Assistive Technology device means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability.  This does not include medical devices that are surgically implanted, or the replacement of such a device.

Assistive technology service is any service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.

Adams 14 SWAAAC Team--What We Do

Services to children and families are available through district and/or regional assistive technology teams, the State Wide Assistive Technology, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (SWAAAC) Team.  In Adams 14, the SWAAAC Team is a district team with representative(s) from each building’s special education team.  This multidisciplinary team may involve occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, vision specialists, assistive technology specialists, special and regular education teachers, parents, and caregivers.  At least one member of the evaluation team should be sufficiently knowledgeable in assistive technology.  The SWAAAC team provides expert assistive technology services in school and classroom settings.  These services are designed to enable students with disabilities to achieve full access and participation in all educational opportunities.
