10 Tips for Parents

These 10 simple tips for getting involved in your child's education provide a great way for you to enhance your student's academic success.

Enhancing your Student's Success at Home

  • Same time/same place - designate an area of your home for homework, and have study time begin at the same time each day
  • Quiet, please - make sure the TV and radio are off during homework time - and keep younger siblings busy so your student is not distracted
  • Supplies? Check! - equip your student's homework area with supplies like pencils, paper and a dictionary
  • Tell me more - have your student explain homework assignments before they begin - and encourage them to explain their completed work
  • Thumbs up - delight in your child's academic accomplishments; showcase work on the refrigerator and celebrate as a family
  • Small details - have a conversation with your child about what was learned at school that day - make your question specific - "What did you like best about the book you read in class today?"
  • Children will follow your lead - when students see you read they understand that learning is a life-long process
  • Keep it positive - be excited about learning and education, and keep comments about teachers and/or the school positive in front of your student
  • A daily dose of reading - create a small area of your home for family reading - and have a variety of books available for daily reading (at least 15 minutes each day)
  • Parents + Teachers - engage in consistent communications with your student's teacher - determine ways to enable your student's success
