Education Foundation Provides Grants for Teachers

Adams 14 Education Foundation Grants More Than $12,000 to District Teachers

The Adams 14 Education Foundation has granted more than $12,000 to 30 Adams 14 teachers to be used for learning projects in literacy, math, and science. Tony Uva, Executive Director of the Foundation, said “we are delighted to make this grant available to the District again this year.”

The teachers designed a variety of learning projects and then applied to the Foundation for mini-grants.  The money that is awarded will help to purchase education supplies that support teacher projects. The Adams 14 Education Foundation helps support projects that increase student achievement in Adams County School District 14 that are not covered by the District’s budget. Following are quotes from three teachers who recently received Foundation grants.

  • Karen Ernst, Intervention Teacher, Rose Hill Elementary School, Reading Rug Roundup. “Getting kids to sit on colored squares on the reading rugs purchased through this grant helps enormously—it helps me group students by color when I need them to partner up for think-pair-shares and other engagement strategies. Before we got the rug, I would assign groups of students to sit in certain areas of the floor but there were no clearly defined spaces; it’s no longer an organizational challenge to place different types of learners and behaviors.”
  • Erin Dorn-Donner, 3rd Grade Teacher, Kemp Elementary School, Super Science. “Receiving the grant not only benefits me but the students too. Super Science is a non-fiction science magazine with non-fiction articles, maps, graphs and diagrams. Children are passionate and curious about the world and even the most reluctant reader may offer a surprise with the extent of their knowledge on a non-fiction or science-related topic. The project goal is to provide students with engaging, relevant and authentic reading materials for classroom investigation and conversation as well as resources to begin their own home magazine library collection for repeated reading with their families.”
  • Emily Taylor, 3rd Grade Teacher, Alsup Elementary School, Making Films with Our Writing. “This grant is helping us purchase two or three video cameras that students can use to record their own films. This will encourage their creativity and artistic expression, and inspire them when they see how they can film their stories for broad audiences. I’ve been making films for five years and am grateful the Foundation has been able to help.”
