Martin loves listening to rap music, playing video games, painting, and dreams of becoming an electrical engineer; however Martin’s first priority is to have a kidney transplant.

Martin was born in Coahuila, Mexico on April 11, and since then, he has been fighting for his life. Martin was born with some of his organs out of place, and doctors in Mexico had no hope for him to survive. His parents made the difficult decision to send Martin to the United States to find medical help.

Martin arrived in Denver with his uncle when he was only six months old. At 14 months old, he underwent a major surgery that lasted 16 hours at Children’s Hospital in Aurora.

After surgery, Martin was given high dose of antibiotics that caused kidney failure when he was two years old. He went into surgery again at the age of four, and later underwent two additional medical procedures.

Since 2011, Martin has needed dialysis three times a week, four hours each day at Children’s Hospital, which makes it a challenge to be in school. He has to take some classes online, and attend school in the evenings.

Martin, like any other kid his age, wants to have a normal life - and there is hope for him. He needs to have a kidney transplant, but in order to do so, he needs a strong network of support.

His family and friends are organizing a walk on his behalf, with a team called “Walking with Martin,“at the Colorado Kidney Walk that the National Kidney Foundation organizes each year.

The walk will take place on Sunday, May 19 at 9 a.m. at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado.

More than 100 students and 50 staff members from Adams 14 volunteered their time to help the law enforcement and emergency agencies practice their preparedness procedures.

Adams 14 thanks the following agencies that participated today, and provide ongoing support and protection services to the Adams 14 community, including;

Dupont students, staff and parents collected an impressive 2,500 pounds of non-perishable and canned food items. On March 20, 2013, eight Student Council members – Haley Cookson (Student Council President), Diego Guevara (Student Council Vice President), Bridgette Menke (Student Council Secretary), Elier Carrasco (Student Council Treasurer), Neveah Revello, America Gomez and Janette Contreras – delivered the collected items to the HOPE Center.

HOPE Center Coordinator, Mary Ann Mosquera, gave the students a tour of the Center, and described the services they provide to families in Adams 14.

The HOPE Family Resource Center is a community-supported initiative that operates out of the first floor of the administration building and offers food, clothing, school supplies, uniforms and other basic living resources for families. Since it opened in 2007, the Center has served more than 2,000 children by providing sources of nutrition, clothing, furniture and other essential items. The HOPE Family Resource Center also offers job assistance and referrals to adult education classes to Adams 14 families.

The Dupont students worked tirelessly to unpack and stock the HOPE Center’s shelves, which were full when they left!

The students were delighted to be able to give back to their community, and after a discussion with Dupont Principal, Pat Almeida, they unanimously decided to make this an annual event hosted by the Student Council.

A group of 15 Monaco moms were a part of the inaugural Parent Cooking Class that took place on January 24, offered by the District’s Nutrition Services Department. “We were thrilled to initiate this program at Monaco,” said Cindy Veney, manager of Nutrition Services. “This extraordinary group of parents wanted to learn more about the meals being served to their children, and we were able to showcase our nutritious and delicious offerings in a fun and inclusive environment.”

“The 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant, known as the Bridges program, is excited to be part of this partnership,” said Veney. “These classes are a great way to get families involved in preparing healthy meals for their children.”

After inquiring about the meals being served at Monaco, interested parents worked with Monaco staff – including Principal Meg McCormick, Parent Liaison Frances Montoya and Amy Silverberg, the Bridges Coordinator for Monaco and Hanson Elementary – the Nutrition Services Department to put together a Parent Cooking Class. The class showcased step-by-step and hands-on instructions for re-creating school meals at home.

During the first class on January 24, parents learned how to make Lo Mein. After the meal was prepared, parents received a portion to take home for dinner that night, as well as a recipe for future meal planning. The Bridges grant provided all funds for the food used in this program.

The next class will be held on March 14 from 2-3:30 p.m., making macaroni and cheese, followed by April 11 from 2:30-3:30 p.m., making enchiladas.
